Apprenticeships get a boost

Posted on 11-04-2012.

More people are starting apprenticeships, according to figures from the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills.

In the first half of the 2011-12 academic year 256,500 people started an apprenticeship, including 79,100 people aged under 19, 77,100 19-24 year-olds and 100,300 adults aged 25 or over.

Skills minister John Hayes said: “These increases are extremely encouraging and it is testament to the Government’s unwavering commitment to apprenticeships. They are at the heart of our skills policy because they equip people with the skills they need for a prosperous future and provide businesses with the expertise they need to grow.”

The figures were released as Asset Skills announced £1.5m funding to develop degree-level apprenticeships in facilities management.

The money has been secured from the Higher Apprenticeship Fund to support apprenticeships in FM up to levels 4, 5 and 6. To deliver the apprenticeships, Asset Skills has formed a partnership including the British Institute of Facilities Management, Sheffield Hallam University, Building Engineering Services Training (BEST), Leeds College of Building, Manchester College, the Training and Learning Company and Westminster Kingsway College.

This group has started consulting with facilities employers about what sort of areas higher apprenticeships should cover. A mapping exercise collating information on existing professional qualifications and learning has also started.
